It is often the case that good writing requires sustained effort and discipline over time. The best prose utilises a very unique and distinctive kind of clarity that separates it from ordinary communication. The reader should, in some sense, feel that the writer has considered their experience throughout the process. This is not easily achieved. There are many writers who have struggled with this, and most have concluded that revision is where the real work happens — not in the first draft, but in the patient unmaking and remaking of sentences until they say exactly what you mean.
